Regatta Raises $41,000 to Fight Blood Cancers

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) 2011 Leukemia Cup Regatta, held January 14-16 at Lake Pleasant, raised $41,000 to support the fight against blood cancers. The Society’s signature sailing event has raised more than $300,000 in Arizona in the last 4 years. “We would especially like to acknowledge the Arizona Yacht Club (AYC), for their commitment over the past 9 years in running a safe and very competitive sailing race for us,” said Jon Meyers, Executive Director of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Desert Mountain States Chapter. “The need for continued investments in research is critical. More than 900,000 people in the United States are currently living with leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma and an estimated 55,000 will lose their battle over the coming year.” The chapter holds its sailing fundraiser in conjunction with the AYC, who celebrate their Birthday Regatta over the Martin Luther King, Jr., holiday weekend each year.

Fundraising events depend upon the support of the area community, and LLS gratefully acknowledges its 2011 Leukemia Cup Regatta sponsors: Arizona Yacht Club, Wolters Kluwer, Protea Medical Center, Phoenix School of Law, ST Microelectronics, Smith Law Group, West Marine, North Sail, SailShop, AGM Technical Solution, Arizona Boating and Water Sports, Mt. Gay Rum, Sailing World, Vineyard Vines, Jobson Sailing, John MeCray, Ken Gardiner, The Heislers, AmeriChoice, United Healthcare, Colligo Marine, Casa Technology Systems and Full Sail Brewery.

The three days of the Regatta proved once again that the wind in Arizona can be great, good and also non-existent, all in the same weekend!  Friday, January 14, saw consistent wind all day out of the north to northeast. Saturday, January 15, was a typical Lake Pleasant day with a couple of races off to the north before the midday shift and another race or two off to the south. Sunday was good in the morning, but without a hard and fast shift to the south, fleets checked out around noon. The wind did come back up, but by then the RC had flown the AP/A and everyone was on their way home. A special thank you to Peter Howson of SailLog.net for coming out and taking some really great pictures. Check them out at www.saillog.net

AYC-ers Sail with Jobson for Leukemia Fund Raising

Gary Jobson and the Carolina Yacht Club hosted 80 sailors and their guests – including two AYC Buccaneer sailors (Chris Robertson and Emory Heisler) for the “Sail with Jobson – Fantasy Sail Weekend” December 3-5, 2010.

Not to miss an opportunity to sail, Emory showed up a day early to sail with his Buccaneer skipper from 2010 Buccaneer North American Championships (BNAC) Captain Ray Dunn who also just happens to live in the Charleston area – proof once again that if you know a Buccaneer, you probably know someone in just about any port in the country!  Arrrrr!

Along with an afternoon of sailing with Gary Jobson hopping from boat to boat, the weekend included many reminders about the Leukemia Cup Regattas, the Leukemia Lymphoma Society, and their shared mission to cure blood cancers. Attendees included at least half-a-dozen blood cancer survivors, but also was missing several participants from previous years that were not so fortunate to have the cure they needed for their version of the disease.

Get your fund raising “hat” on for the AZ Leukemia Cup Regatta and next year you might be  sailing with Gary Jobson in NEW YORK CITY!

Get your Birthday Regatta RACE GEAR!

Our Ship’s Store is now offering more gear with the Birthday Regatta logos!  Check out the entire BIRTHDAY REGATTA GEAR PAGE!

If you are into tech gear we are offering the Long Sleeve and Short Sleeve Microfiber Tech shirts…these will be screen printed with the front, back and sleeve logo just like the cotton shirts you buy when you register.

In addition, get tons of other gear with the logo embroidered on.  All items ordered will be shipped to us and be given to you at the regatta!

Act now and you can get additional holiday savings!  Check the right side of the BIRTHDAY REGATTA GEAR PAGE for more info.

(BTW – there is a small error on their page that makes a reference to the Ultimate 20 North American Logo – we are aware of the problem and it will not affect your order!)

2011 Birthday Regatta – Details Being Finalized

For all of you anxiously awaiting the 2011 Birthday Regatta, we are finalizing a few details with some of the vendors, but I would like to put out some details for you:

RACE DATES AND TIMES – LAKE PLEASANT

Race Day 1 January 14, 2011
Race Day 2 January 15, 2011
Race Day 3 January 16, 2011

First Warning Signal on Friday 11:30 am
First Warning Signal on Saturday 11:30 am
First Warning Signal on Sunday 09:00 am

Racing will be 14, 15 16 Jan; however, each fleet will need to decide for themselves what days “count.”  Unlike past years, at this time there is no plan to have a separate set of awards for a Friday race day. Fleet Captains please send your decisions to the RC Chairman, Rob Gibbs at RobDaSailor@gmail.com by the end of December.  The Leukemia Cup is, as usual, only Saturday and requires a separate entry fee, ALL of which goes to the Arizona Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.  It takes 5 or more entries to fleet.

Of course the final NOR and SI will override anything posted here, but these details shouldn’t change.  Thanks for your patience while we work out the final details with our partners.
