Off to a bit of a slow start in the first two wees of racing at TTL, but here are the results anyway:
Well, the 3 days of the regatta proved once again that the wind in AZ can be great, good and, well, non-existent all in the same weekend day. Friday was consistent wind all day out of the North to Northeast. Saturday was a typical Lake Pleasant day with a couple of races off to the north before the midday shift and another race or two off to the South. Sunday was good in the morning, but without a hard and fast shift to the South, fleets checked out around noon. The wind did come back up, but by then the RC had flown the AP/A and everyone was on their way home. Thanks to Peter Howson of SailLog.net for coming out and taking some really great pictures. After a great day of wind consistently out of the N to NE. Capsizes and roundups were the order of the day, but when all was said and done everyone was smiling!
The SCYA Midwinter Regatta’s history is packed with legendary sailors and their boats from the early days to the present. The event began in 1928, when SCYA and the LA Junior Chamber of Commerce teamed up to promote Southern California as the sports “paradise” of sailing venues. As hoped, the event attracted boats from the Great Lakes, Atlantic Coast and the rest of the Pacific Coast and some of the best known yachtsmen in America.
Los Angeles Harbor was the only venue for many years. The first venue expansion added Alamitos Bay then Marina del Rey and King Harbor. New venues continued to be added through the years until races were being held from Santa Barbara to San Diego and as far east as Arizona and Nevada. Some changes in venue and classes occur from year to year to keep current with class interest. Today 25 or more host clubs and 100 classes participate in the Midwinters.
A few little known facts:
• The Regatta was put on hold during WWII and resumed again in 1946.
• The Star Class is the only one-design class that has sailed in every Midwinter Regatta held.
• The Naples Sabots raced for the first time in 1946 and for 57 years was one of the largest classes. The class quickly grew to huge numbers and it was still the largest class raced 57 years later in 2003.
• Humphrey Bogart raced his yacht Santana in the event in 1947 and lost to Ed Witte.
• In 1954 Mitzi Gaynor was Queen of the Regatta.
• Cal 40s, one of the first fiberglass boats raced for the first time in 1964.
• The1967 Midwinters had 996 entries and 20 one-design classes over 25feet.
• The largest number of entries was in 1977 at over 1,200.
The Southern California Yachting Association’s 82nd Annual Midwinter Regatta 2011 is gearing up for the weekend of February 19th and 20th. The Regatta will be hosted at yacht clubs and associations from Channel Islands to San Diego and all ports in between. Several inland lakes from the Pacific Coast to Arizona will also see racing. Races will be held for dinghies, cruisers, one design sailboats, PHRF racers, multihulls, radio-controlled models, land yachts, powerboats and outrigger canoes (did we miss anyone?).
Regarded as a season opener, the Midwinter Regatta is a community event that unites over 600 boaters throughout Southern California and Arizona. D.I.S.C, spine, orthopedic and sports medicine specialist, supports the competitive spirit and body and wouldn’t miss a chance to partner with SCYA for this grand event; don’t you either! There is still time to sign up for the Birthday Regatta / Leukemia Cup! REGISTRATION IS STILL OPEN and will remain open until 9:30 am on Saturday the 15th (that’s the Skipper’s Meeting!)
You can’t pre-order shirts anymore but we will have a VERY LIMITED quantity available on site. Get there early as I’m sure the stock will go quickly – first come first served!
Also, if you just need to order dinner or breakfast, you can still do so. Just go to the REGISTRATION PAGE and un-check the race entry and select only what you need.
Also, just because your fleet isn’t “Officially” racing on Friday, don’t let that stop you from coming out and getting some practice in! We’ll be making fleets that morning and we’ll post the finishes so come out, have some fun and GO RACE!

I’d like to extend the opportunity to participate as race committee to everyone if you don’t already have an offer to crew. We need 6 volunteers for Friday and 8 for Sat and Sun. The jobs include running the start line, calling the finish line, and being race support on one of our two runabouts. You can volunteer for 1, 2 or 3 days of help. Don’t worry if you haven’t done it before…we’ll teach you everything you need to know!
Friday, racing starts at 11:30 am. I would like anyone who wants to help to meet me near the “big tent” (you can’t miss it) at Lake Pleasant. You will need to arrive around 8:00am planning to leave the dock NLT 10:00.
Saturday, racing starts at 11:30 so same schedule (again with time to make assignments and do a little training). Sunday Racing starts at 9:00 so please plan on arriving around 6:45am and getting off the dock by 7:00.

Please get your registration completed by December 30, 2010! Register Here. This is the only way to get your Regatta T-Shirt, which only available for purchase until December 30th! Get other gear like microfiber/drytech shrts, Gill bags and shorts with the Birthday Regatta Logo straight from our manufacturer here and it will be delivered directly to the regatta.

The closest hotel to Lake Pleasant is the Hampton Inn in Anthem and they have offered entrant a discounted room rate here.
Slips are available for $20.00 per night at Pleasant Harbor Marina at 602 912 1664 if you mention that you are with the Arizona Yacht Club.
Also, if you mention the Arizona Yacht Club to RV Rental Outlet, they can bring up a motor home and set it up for you at the lake for you weekend. Their number is 888 461 0023. You will also have to let Pleasant Harbor know so you can get a camp site.
If you want, tent and car camping is available for the price of admission to the park, but if you pitch your tent on a lawn, get ready for the sprinklers!

Don’t miss the first major AZ Regatta of 2011! It’s time to get ready for the Arizona Yacht Club Birthday Regatta and the 12th Annual Arizona Leukemia Cup – the first Leukemia Cup Regatta of 2011 January 14th through the 16th, 2011.
AYC and the Desert Mountain Chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society invite you to join in for a full range of on-water and on-shore fun. Activities will include three days of racing Friday through Sunday with meals, entertainment and a special dinner Saturday. Our keynote speaker Saturday night will be Paralympic GOLD MEDAL WINNER and newly elected U S Sailing Board of Directors Member, Maureen McKinnon-Tucker in addition to our outstanding special auction to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
Racing will be from Friday through Sunday (Friday optional, each class will determine two or three days of racing), with the Leukemia Cup being held on Saturday.
Don’t miss Friday night’s dinner. It is being prepared by the legendary culinary skill of our current Club Champion, Rick Johnson.
Our race committee will have a special look this year too! Andrea Caroe from Mission Bay Yacht Club in San Diego will be our PRO! Many of the Buccaneer and 14.2 sailors will remember her Pink RC flag from their events held at MYC.

UPDATED – After a couple of corrections on PHRF/Portsmouth Ratings we have RE-Posted the Results to the Governor’s Cup.
The fleet scores from the 2010 Governor’s Cup are available. These are the fleet scores, but remember the NOR states that the cup will be awarded to “the boat finishing the race with “outstanding seamanship” over the 26.2 mile course as voted on by a board of volunteers made up of fleet representatives.” So be sure to come to the December Membership Meeting to find out who gets that HUGE Rum Grog…I mean…Trophy…yeah.
AND in case you didn’t remember (ha ha), the December Membership Meeting is always our Buccaneer Gift Exchange!

Racing will be 14, 15 16 Jan; however, each fleet will need to decide for themselves what days “count.” Unlike past years, at this time there is no plan to have a separate set of awards for a Friday race day. Fleet Captains please send your decisions to the RC Chairman, Rob Gibbs at RobDaSailor@gmail.com by the end of December. The Leukemia Cup is, as usual, only Saturday and requires a separate entry fee, ALL of which goes to the Arizona Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. It takes 5 or more entries to fleet.
Of course the final NOR and SI will override anything posted here, but these details shouldn’t change. Thanks for your patience while we work out the final details with our partners.
