Spring Cleaning, Improvements and Deals

Spring is a busy time of year for AYC. We are enjoying another season of racing, preparing for the upcoming elections in April, and trying to squeeze in as much as possible before the summer heat flattens our sails, or at least our energy, for being outdoors.

At our March meeting, we were delighted to hear from member and past Commodore Chris Smith. He delivered an informative and entertaining presentation on wing surfing and paddle boards, gave out free t-shirts, and extended an invitation to try out wing surfing in June. More details to follow. Thanks Chris!

Many of you have noticed the new advertising skins on the Lake Pleasant Committee boat. I want to thank our Lake Captain, David Newland for leading and organizing this project. Another big improvement is a new engine for the boat. The deposit was made and we are waiting on the supply chain, but expect it soon. David was instrumental in walking our new engine purchase through to completion. Below is one of my favorite pics of the RC boat on the water during the Birthday Regatta. Nice and obvious!

Speaking of photos from the Birthday Regatta – If you’ve not looked at the hundreds of photos Joanne Aspinall took over that weekend, the album link is on the Birthday Regatta page. Thank you, Joanne, for your time and talent!

Let’s do some spring cleaning! We are reviving our AYC Adopt a Highway commitment so we don’t risk losing our free advertising sign out on Lake Pleasant Parkway (aka Carefree Highway). So far we have 12 volunteers coming out on Saturday, April 9 @ 9:00 am. We will divide and conquer to clean up our section and then enjoy some lunch and socializing afterwards at Wild Horse West. Children 12 and over can participate with an adult. Bring cash! More details will be sent directly to the volunteers. Sign up here to join us

In case you missed the event email sent Sunday, I found this neat bit of information that you might not know. Many of you are familiar with the lyrics Gordon Lightfoot wrote for his 1974 hit song, Carefree Highway.

…Carefree Highway
Let me slip away on you
Carefree highway
You’ve seen better days…

Gordon got his inspiration for the song from none other than our very own Carefree Highway (SR74). Read the story here
