Al Lehman and Mike Ferring: Radio Controlled Sailboat Racing

by Mike Ferring

I blame the Lehmans, father and son. They dangled the bait and set the hook. Reeled me in. At the June monthly meeting, maybe we can do the same for you.

The bait was a turn at the joysticks to control a sailboat. Just wiggle them this way and that and the boat responds. Sails trim in and out and rudder swipes left and right. The Lehmans set the hook with a chance to sail in a Payson regatta using Al’s SeaWind. I finished last, but I was well and truly hooked.

Yes, we’re talking radio-controlled sailboats, not the full-size kind. Easy to sail, easy to rig and move, easy to afford. I mean, when did you buy a new suit of sails for a hundred bucks? You’d be amazed at the big-time sailors around the country who have taken up the hobby. Clusters of them gather for a race and a beer. Would you like to know the appeal?

Phoenix has plenty of RC opportunities and Al and I will show you around when we present the June meeting program. How’s that for setting the hook?

Al Lehman is a longtime AYC member, former Commodore, TransPac veteran, generally all-around club stalwart and good guy. Mike Ferring is AYC’s new Racing Captain, former Commodore, committed full-size boat sailor and now—it’s true—Commodore of the West Valley R/C Mariners.

Al Lehman scores a race at the Gilbert Model Yacht Club regatta.

The City of Tempe permits AYC to use The Grill for our monthly meetings. Our usage is after their normal operating hours, which means that we’ll have the facility to ourselves and that Tempe will incur added labor costs for providing after-hours kitchen and wait staff. As part of our arrangement, they ask that we generously support their staff with food and beverage orders to defray labor costs.
