April Meeting: AYC Member Navigates Back-to-Back Win!

By Ed Scheletsky, Rear Commodore

The San Diego to Puerto Vallarta race has been happening for decades. Created in 1953, its finish line has seen several locations along the West Coast of Mexico and, in the early days, as far south as Acapulco. Later, it was moved north to Las Hadas and then to Puerto Vallarta, where competitors now finish in the warm waters of Banderas Bay. This race continues to be a draw because of its challenging course, skilled competition, steady winds, and full moon.

Member and racer Mike Maloney

Join us at April’s monthly meeting to hear how AYC member Michael Maloney recently navigated the Santa Cruz 50 “Trouble” to back-to-back wins in the 2022 and 2024 Vallarta Race. “This year’s race was very challenging due to mostly light and variable winds and a very competitive fleet,” Michael says. He will present how he prepared for and executed his race strategy based on more than 25 years and 30,000 miles of ocean racing. Last April, Mike spoke about the California Racing Scene so you can read more about his background in that post.

Guests are always welcome at our monthly meetings, so invite a friend and come early.
