First Aid / CPR / AED Training Class Now Available

By Bob Naylor – Safety Committee

The AYC Safety Committee has partnered with Cross Lifeline Training to provide first aid, CPR, and AED training classes for interested members. The key purpose of this class is to increase the number of first-aid certified sailors on hand for our on-the-water and other events, such as our upcoming Fall Series racing.

To that end, this class is intended for:

  • AYC’s Standing Race Committee members.
  • ASF Level 1 Sailing Instructors – current or future.
  • Anyone reasonably certain they will race – as a skipper or crew – in the Fall Series at either Lake Pleasant or Tempe Town Lake.
  • ASU Sailing Team Safety Officers.
  • AYC members at large.

To encourage participation, the AYC Board of Directors is providing the training for free or at a discount as follows:

  • FREE to standing Race Committee members.
  • FREE to current and prospective ASF Level 1 Sailing Instructors.
  • Free to ASU Safety Officers.
  • 50% discount ($29) to AYC skippers and crew racing in the upcoming Fall Series races.
  • $58 for all other AYC members.

For maximum flexibility, the course has an online, self-paced component that takes about 1.5 to 3 hours to complete. The online training is followed by 90 minutes of classroom instruction, which will take place on Thursday, September 12, from 6 to 7:30 pm, at the North Tempe Multigenerational Center (located about 1 mile north of Tempe Town Lake). Upon completion, participants are internationally certified for two years.

The class follows the curriculum, content, and standards of the American Health & Safety Institute (HSI) and is recognized by the U.S. Coast Guard and U.S. Sailing.

Knowing what to do in a life-threatening emergency is helpful not only when sailing but also at home, at work, on the hiking trail, golf course, ski slope, and everywhere in between.

With cooler weather ahead and busier schedules, sign up now for the AYC First Aid / CPR / AED class.
