Feeling land locked? Wondering how to get out and improve beyond a beginner sailor? Interested in purchasing a boat? Come to our September meeting to hear some inspiration from AYC sailor Luiz Largura!
Luiz’s presentation will focus on his journey as a recreational sailor, from learning the basics and racing small dinghies to gaining offshore sailing experience. He will share some of the experiences, challenges, and lessons he has learned along the way, particularly from sailing different types of boats and gradually building the confidence and skills needed for longer passages.
He will also discuss the process of searching for and purchasing a sailboat overseas, including some of the unexpected challenges involved with registration, insurance, VAT and export requirements. His goal is not to present himself as an expert, but rather to share the perspective of someone who is still learning and hopefully provide useful—and sometimes entertaining lessons for other sailors.

Luiz Largura was born and raised in Angra dos Reis, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and has called the United States home since 2013. He currently lives in Phoenix, Arizona (since 2018), with his wife, Marcela, and two daughters. A mechanical engineer by profession, Luiz has always had a strong connection with the ocean and a passion for learning, traveling, and taking on new challenges.
