Racing season has officially started, and fall is (finally) in the air. It’s time to submit some “What I did on my summer break” reports! At our October meeting we’ll hear from a few of our AYC members who will share about their 2026 sailing adventures.
Mike Parker will enlighten us of his adventures sailing in the Salish Sea, in the Pacific Northwest. And when we say adventures, we mean adventures. Mike Parker-type adventures. In his own words, “Do you want to experience the natural beauty and freedom to roam from cove to cove that comes with water-born travel on your own schedule? Well, don’t do it like I did. But did I die?”
Rachel Kennett and Joel Oglesbee will take us on a more tropical route to the British Virgin Islands, where they chartered a Oceanis 48. We’ll hear about their experience at this popular cruising destination, all the way to the “Bitter End” (Yacht Club, that is).
Come get inspired for your own future adventures!
Tuesday, October 13th, 7pm
Come as early as 6pm for dinner and socializing. Guests are welcome!
Location:Â Dave and Busters in Tempe Marketplace (in the Showroom)
2000 E Rio Salado Pkwy / Suite 1100 / Tempe AZ 85281

Rachel and Joel met in October 2024, and sailing showed up almost immediately. One of their early dates was on Tempe Town Lake, and by Dinghy Days Rachel was completely hooked on sailing! Since then, they’ve kept learning, racing, cruising, and finding ever-bigger excuses to get on a boat together. Joel is currently the AYC Cruising Captain, and Rachel is one of our Membership Coordinators.
Former Commodore Mike Parker (2008) and his wife Erika have been active AYC members since 2003. Mike, who surprisingly has yet to win the Blunder Bucket, has owned so many different boats over the years we’ve lost count, but is often seen on Santana 20s or Buccaneer 18s.
Hope to see you there!
