Opening Day at Lake Pleasant

By Bob Naylor

Twenty-four boats sailed in our Lake Pleasant Opening Day races, enjoying excellent weather and generally favorable winds. The Catalina-22 Fleet was on Race Committee, and got a big boost from three NEW club members – many thanks to AYC newbies Robbye Langenfeld, Kevin Kendall, Gene Peterson, and welcome again to AYC!  PRO George Tingom and team delivered three races to all five fleets on Saturday before winds diminished early in the third race.

The Multi-hull Fleet is back!  Seven catamarans jammed the start line on Saturday – the biggest fleet of the day. It was great to see them darting about the lake and competing again!  PHRF Spin fielded six boats on Saturday, and the PHRF Sportboat Fleet had five boat squaring-off.  The handicap fleet race results are pending.

Brian Hackman debuted Hot Rod, his new Santana 20, and won the “Best Paint Job” competition – she’s a beauty!  And Hot Rod lived up to her name, taking first place in the third heat against tough competition from three other Santanas.  Martin and Cedric Lorch skippered Water Colors to victory in the first race with Joel Hurley guiding The Implication to win race #2. Myles Danner’s Cielo Azul was never far behind, but couldn’t quite break into the top 3…good crew is hard to find.  Really great fleet competition!

The Thistles rounded out the one-design fleets with two boats racing. Skip Kempff’s Echo bested Max Sprinkle’s Ruby in both races.  As the afternoon wind died, even the little Thistle’s struggled to make way in the light air.

PRO Bob Worrall led the Race Committee on Sunday, knocking out two races for 14 boats before the wind died.  PHRF Spin and Sportboat each had four boats racing – three Santana 20s raced along with two multi-hulls.  Skip was the sole Thistle – and he won both races!  Both Santana racers finished with Martin Lorch taking honors, closely followed by Brian Hackman in 2nd place, and Marc Danner clinching 3rd.  Results are still pending for handicap fleets.
See the results here.

All-in-all, a great start to the 2020 Fall Series!  The racing resumes at Lake Pleasant on October 3rd.
