Opening Day at Tempe Town Lake

By Gordon Briner

We’re sailing!!  The Arizona Yacht Club fall racing season began on Tempe Town Lake Sunday, September 13th, at 3:00 PM with the starting signal for the Junior sailors. Clear skies and light winds made for a mix of variable conditions for the start of the season. The wind blew in almost every direction during the afternoon and showed brief moments of filling in, only to fade.  Some fleets were able to complete three races while others settled for two.

There was a great showing of enthusiastic sailors from young to old and new to experienced. The Capri 14.2 fleet had a strong showing, as did the Junior and Sunfish fleet. A couple of Buccaneers and a Fireball sailed in the Portsmouth category. All were out on the water, enjoying a bit of sailboat racing.

John Mayall (C14), Bob Naylor (Sunfish), Colin Gibbs (Junior), and Clay Poulson (Portsmouth) lead their fleets for the first day.

Thanks to the Laser Fleet for taking on the race committee duties for the season opener. Week one results can be viewed here.
