One of the traditions that has made AYC a great yacht club is our annual Leukemia Cup –a fundraising drive leading up to our biggest event of the year, the Birthday Regatta on February 13. Anyone can participate in the Leukemia Cup; no sailing required. You can double your fun by taking part in both events.
Arizona Yacht Club is one of 45 US yacht clubs hosting Leukemia Cup events. AYC members have raised over $725,000 to fund the groundbreaking work of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS).
LLS is the largest nonprofit dedicated to creating a world without blood cancer, which accounts for 10% of all new cancer cases in the US and is the 3rd leading cause of cancer deaths. LLS has played a direct role in over 85% of blood cancer treatments and therapies approved by the FDA in the past few years, dramatically improving patient outcomes.
COVID-19 has made this a difficult year in many ways. Non-profits like LLS have been hit hard by reduced donations. For our part, AYC is planning a smaller Birthday Regatta with one day of great sailing instead of three days, and we must cancel the fun social events that generate a large share of our LLS donations.
That’s why we need to rely more on the community spirit of AYC members to support this great cause by becoming Leukemia Cup fundraisers.
This campaign ends with the Birthday Regatta on February 13. The top Leukemia Cup individual, team and fleet fundraisers will be recognized alongside winners of the Birthday Regatta races and events. In the coming weeks, we’ll share Leukemia Cup updates and facts about the incredible work being done by LLS.
