Tall Cactus Cup 2021

By Marc Danner, Commodore

On Saturday, the 24th of April, 28 boats set out to be the best of their respective fleets in the Tall Cactus Cup. All competitors began racing at 2:00 pm with a 15kt breeze blowing in from the south. The winds remained steady, 10-15kts recorded, with gusts up to 20kts throughout the race. The PHRF, multi-hull, and Portsmouth fleets were all represented, along with Myles Danner, the youngest skipper on the water in his Laser.

Given the strong winds, Chris Picknally, sailing on his GCat 5.7, finished the race in 1-hour and 25- minutes, clinching the win within the multi-hull fleet. Mike Hester and Court Roberts battled it out in the PHRF fleet, but in the end, Mike crossed the finish line just 55 seconds ahead of Court. Ron Anikler was too fast for Alex and Myles on his Mc Scow and secured the 1st place finish within the Portsmith fleet.

A great day was had on the water with strong winds and a friendly, competitive spirit between sailors. A special shout-out to Will Zornik and his crew, as they did an amazing job setting the marks and supporting the race on the mark-set boat.

Congratulations to the winners of each fleet! Trophies will be awarded at the next general AYC meeting on Tuesday, May 11.
