Fall in Arizona: Racing & Fun

Ahoy Sailors

Our daylight hours are slowly shrinking as we head toward the Fall season, but our AYC calendar remains bright and full! So let’s get this season started!

Our first Fall Series race will begin on Sunday, September 12, at Tempe Town Lake with the Sunfish Fleet on Race Committee. Contact Fleet Captain Bob Naylor if you’d like to show up and learn more about the duties involved in serving on Race Committee at TTL. After racing on the 12th, the TTL racers and crew are invited to stop by Fate Brewery, near the lake, for some hot pizza and cool drinks.

Speaking of racing at TTL, the club needs a few volunteers to handle the Adopt a Boat logistics for those members wanting to use the C14.2s and Lasers. Two or three volunteers would be ideal for this position. This shares the responsibilities and helps cover them when one person is unavailable. You don’t need to be a racer at TTL to help with the Adopt a Boat, but it might be convenient.
Maybe you live nearby and want to help welcome some of the newer members with getting on the water by helping with rigging, giving a lesson on backing up and launching a boat, and how to get the boat back to storage without killing the mast.
See the TTL race schedule for associated dates. Please get in touch with me if you’re interested in helping with Adopt a Boat! Maybe this is that one thing you do as a volunteer member – hint, hint! 🙂

Boat cleanup dates are on the AYC Calendar for this upcoming weekend and you can probably guess what we need. I’m feeling like Uncle Sam now – we need you!
Saturday, August 28 @ 8:00 am at Tempe Town Lake – the contact is Cindy Pilotte.
Sunday, August 29 @ 9:00 am at Lake Pleasant – contact David Newland if you can give him a hand. Read the related web post for more details.

We’ll have the September 14th Monthly Membership Meeting at The Grill @ Rolling Hills Golf Course. Our first speaker will be Martin Lorch, who will share his experience participating in the famous Baja Ha-Ha Rally. The Rally occurs every November, with participants cruising approximately 750nm from San Diego to Cabo San Lucas, MX.

Opening Day at Lake Pleasant:

The fun will continue for the Lake Pleasant racers as they prepare for their first day of racing, Saturday, September 18, with the Sport Boat Fleet on Race Committee. We’ll also host our Opening Day Celebration and start the day out with a bang by firing the canon!

Here’s a sneak peek at the lineup:

  • Breakfast quesadillas prepared and cooked on-site by members Joe & Bonnie Motil. Remember those fantastic burritos they made in 2019? They were delicious!!! So come hungry.
  • BBQ dinner after racing with all the fixings and side dishes.
  • Music of some sort.
  • Corn Hole will be available.
  • Raffle prizes during dinner and music.

More details coming in September!!!

Rear Commodore Marshall Williamson can use some help making this event a success. Any of you early risers available to help set up? How about helping with dinner plans? Please review this Opening Day Volunteer Sign Up form – to identify where you can pitch in to help? Thanks to those of you that already signed up!
