Some of us like to race sailboats year-round, and since most racing is in the summer, you might have to be a road warrior to do this. We know many of you AYC racers hit the road for cooler temps and competitive racing.
One such member, Lee Perry, packed up his MC Scow and drove to Kansas City to compete in the 45th annual “Orlando Webb” regatta on June 1st and 2nd at the Missouri Yacht Club. Participants included 27 top MC sailors from 10 states. Lee won the furthest from home award, beating a New Jersey participant by a few miles.
Lee had this to say about his escape from the Valley heat, “It was a long drive, but great scenery. The regatta was a good challenge and I improved my skills.”
I also made the trip to KC. But I took the easy route: fly in and borrow a boat! Here is a Regatta Report and Results.
On May 18-19, I raced in the “Spring Dinghyfest” at the Rush Creek Yacht Club just East of Dallas. I flew to Dallas and borrowed a boat for this one, too. It is one of the most competitive MC Scow clubs and home to several National Champions. Here are the Results.
My son Brett and I are trailering “double-stack MC Scows” to Longmont, Colorado for the “Scowboys” regatta at the end of June. Lee Perry will hit the road again and join in the fun. We hope to make new friends and experience racing at the Union Reservoir. Brett and I may go to MC Scow Nationals in Wisconsin in August, where there will likely be over 100 boats on the starting line!
