AYC Members Raft-Up at Cole’s Bay

By Rachel Kennett

Winter sailing isn’t for everyone. It’s for those who laugh when they can see their breath in the air, who see a sunny cove as an invitation, not a deterrent. At AYC, we embrace the crisp air, the camaraderie, and the adventure. Our recent raft-up at Cole’s Bay, Lake Pleasant, is a perfect example of what makes this club—and its wintertime escapades—so special.

In 21 feet of water, anchored securely with a 100-foot chain, four boats rafted up in Cole’s Bay for an unforgettable weekend. For those geographically inclined, Cole’s Bay can be found at the head of the lake, north of North and South Barker Islands. It is the westernmost of two bays. Despite the cold, the camaraderie and good food kept spirits warm and lively!

The intrepid crew was made up of Joel Oglesbee and Rachel Kennett aboard Little Adventure, Joel’s Catalina 270; Ed Scheletsky skippering Art, his Catalina 250; Gary Eagle and on Cholla, a Catalina 25, and longtime club affiliates Jeff and Ray Eisner on Luna Maria, their Seaward 32. The chilly evening set the stage for good-natured competition—not just on the water, but in the galley.

Joel, determined to dethrone Joe Motil’s legendary cooking reputation, whipped up a made-from-scratch Fettuccini Alfredo and garlic bread that earned rave reviews. Not to be outdone, Ray brought a stunning layered salad brimming with vibrant, fresh ingredients. Bellies full, the group lingered over the meal, swapping boat stories and discussing races. Eventually, the chilly air sent everyone to their bunks, bundled up tight against freezing temperatures, propane heaters keeping toes toasty (thanks to Bruce Andress!).

In the morning, the sun crept over the cove, softening the chill and casting a golden glow on the boats. Coffee and tea flowed freely, and the group shared breakfast burritos and more chatter about sails and boats, providing the perfect transition from a cozy night to an exhilarating day ahead.

And what a day it was! With steady 6-8 knot winds, it was perfect for spinnaker practice. Sails unfurled, the group spent the day chasing the sunshine and savoring the smooth breezes. Ed and Jeff couldn’t get enough—after hours on the water, they decided to raft up for a second night, proving that sometimes the best adventures are the ones you just can’t bring yourself to end.

Another raft-up is scheduled in February, so email Rachel if you want to join!
