A Little Help Needed for the ASU Cactus Cup

By Bob Naylor

The ASU Sailing Team hosts the PCCSC Cactus Cup this weekend, and it will be epic! This is the event’s second year, and it’s grown bigger and better than ever. Twenty-one FJs will compete on Saturday and Sunday, with about 90 collegiate racers competing from ASU, California State — Channel Islands, San Diego State University, University of California (Davis, Irvine, Los Angeles, Santa Cruz, and San Diego campuses), and the University of Washington.

The team for 2024 poses for this group picture. Let’s help keep them going!

The ASU Sailing Team spends a lot of money on hosting this event, but they don’t get much direct funding from ASU. That’s where you come in! If you can, please help the ASU Sailing Team defer their costs. Click the button below to make a quick and easy donation. Your contribution, no matter how small, will support local collegiate sailing and further strengthen the AYC – ASU sailing partnership. Thanks for your support!

Team president Erin Welker shared that, in discussions this week, PCCSC officials were super impressed with the event and ASU’s efforts. They said it’s amazing that they’re hosting a collegiate sailing event in the middle of the desert – again – with such strong conference team participation.

The Arizona Yacht Club supports the ASU Sailing Team in every way possible. Many volunteers are helping, and AYC boats and equipment are being used to support the event. ASF has provided several FJs. Many thanks to AYC’s Bruce Andress, Martin Lorch, and David Newland, and ASU’s Erin Welker and Mitch Powers for their work in planning and organizing the event.
