High School Sailing

Upwind rounding.
Upwind rounding.

The nonprofit Arizona Sailing Foundation offers sailing classes for high school students throughout the school year. Slam those books closed, put your phone in a waterproof bag and head for the lake! Spend one afternoon each week cruising around the lake and racing around the buoys!

High School Schedule

  • WHEN:
    • Weekly on THURSDAY afternoons, January-April and September-December. Exact dates are updated each Fall and Spring season – details on registration page.
    • Time: 4:00 – 6:30 pm (or dark)
  • WHERE: Meet at the Tempe Town Lake grassy knoll (map).

Learn to Sail – Build Skills and Confidence.  Each session begins with a short on-shore discussion and is followed by plenty of on-the-water training. If you know how to sail, we’ll help you learn to sail faster and coach you on how to win sailboat races. If you don’t know how to sail, we’ll bring you up to speed. Along the way, you’ll learn about knots, boat vocabulary, boat handling, safety, “rules of the road”, docking, and more. Mostly you’ll have a good time “messing around with boats”.

High School and Junior High School Students are Welcome:
High School Sailing includes both Junior and Senior High School students from any school. In fact, anyone from grades 7-12 is welcome.

Cost: $225.

PFDs: Students provide their own PFDs.

Boats: ASF supplies the boats and US Sailing certified instructors. You bring a PFD (personal flotation device) and a smile.
