Once a year in the fall, the nonprofit Arizona Sailing Foundation offers a safe powerboat handling course. The course is primarily intended for Arizona Yacht Club members, but will sometimes have space for nonmembers. The 2019 date has not been chosen.
Learn Valuable High and Low Speed Skills.
Day one is in the classroom at the Eisendrath House in Tempe. Here’s a link to the Google map location. The second day from 9 to 5 is entirely on the water at Lake Pleasant.
Cost: For AYC members on race committee, the course is free. For nonmembers, the course is $150.
The US Coast Guard and the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) have approved this course and an increasing number of states have recognized it as meeting their requirements for a State Boating Education Certificate. In addition, the Arizona Yacht Club requires ALL operators of AYC powerboats to be certified by this course.
The course is taught by US Sailing certified powerboat instructors and includes the safety, rescue and support endorsement for anyone using powerboats to perform safety and rescue functions, such as sailing instructors, coaches, regatta personnel, marine patrols, police and fire rescue personnel, and park rangers—as well as people who want to be certified as operators of race support boats.
