Kids’ Introduction to Sailing

This program targets 8 to 12 years olds, whether they’re just starting or are developing sailing skills. ASF instructors will adjust teaching to suit.

The kids will sail alone on day one, then go to work to build the skills and confidence they need to rig, launch, sail, and put away an Optimist “Opti” sailboat. Many take the class more than once to build skills and confidence.

COST: $265 per student.

CLASS FORMAT & SCHEDULES: Classes are held in the fall and spring on Saturday & Sunday over two weekends, from 8:30am to 12:30pm at Tempe Town Lake North Shore Marina.

ASF provides Optimist Dinghy sailboats, instructors, safety boats, and maximum fun. Students provide their own PFDs and optional helmets. (Click HERE for information about PFD selection from REI.)

Class size is limited to 8. Lead Instructors are US Sailing certified and are required to pass SafeSport training. ASF and US Sailing have zero tolerance for instructional misconduct.

SWIM TEST: Everyone must take a very simple swim test in the lake at the start of class to make sure they’re comfortable in the water.

FAMILY FUN! This is a family-friendly class, and you’re encouraged to bring siblings and friends to join in the afternoon picnic atmosphere during the shore portions of the class, including rigging/launching, boat preparation, and work at the docks.

Here’s a cool video showing how one girl sails in an Opti program at her club.
